Headstone Cleaning Basics

Before you begin to clean any stone, carefully check its condition.  If the surface easily falls away, or the stone moves when touched, do not clean it.  Cleaning may further damage the stone.

The Cleaning Process

  1. Do no harm.
  2. Water, water, water.
  3. Thoroughly soak the stone with water, keeping the stone wet during the entire cleaning process.
  4. Start at the bottom of the stone.  This will minimize streaking and staining.
  5. Using a natural bristle brush, work in small circular motions.  BleachedRemember to keep the stone wet.
  6. Be thorough.  Wash all surfaces and rinse well with lots of clean water.
  7. Repeat as necessary.  However, not all stains can be removed.  Do not expect the stone to appear like new.

NEVER use on stones:

All the above WILL damage the stone.

YOUR BEST CLEANER IS WATER!
